Urban Permaculture Planter 9'

On the back deck of the Green Home Center, we planted a 9' Planter with cabbage, lettuce, kale, lemongrass, artichoke, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, fennel, pansies, violets, and a grape vine -- all edible. We also added a few succulents -- not edible, but very beautiful. All plants were selected and arranged by Carla Lazzarini Design

An unusual event in central California -- the deconstruction of a massive cattle feed lot -- provides the opportunity to make sturdy, functional, beautiful planters that are ideal for creating your own urban permaculture oasis.

Reclaimed fiberglass troughs from the feed lot have been repurposed to provide a large planting environment that is 12" deep at the center, 15 1/2" wide across the top, and 92" in length. A large drain allows the gardener to collect excess water and re-use it elsewhere.

Reclaimed bolts, nuts, and washers are used throughout.

The four sturdy legs are made from salvaged posts that have been holding up 2x8 fence rails for many decades; the legs may vary slightly from 3.5" to 4" per side. The four sides of the planter base are made from salvaged 2x8 fence rails. While some surface checks may occur on the face of these rails, they are selected for their strength.

Through wind, pelting rains, and months of intense sunshine, Mother Nature has ensured that each surface of the posts and rails is uniquely sculpted with weathered grain patterns, often enhanced with colorful lichen colonies.

Specifically designed with a no-kneeling planting height to help avoid gardening backache.
